Understanding Your Genetic Testing Consent
Before genetic testing, you will sign a consent form. Below is a summary of what it covers and what your rights are.
Note: Each consent form you sign will be specific to the test your provider ordered.
A lab test that looks at your DNA for changes linked to certain health conditions. Tests may check for disorders caused by single-gene (monogenic) mutations, or combine multiple markers into a polygenic risk score that predicts risk of developing a disease.
Positive: a change was found that may affect your health or carrier status. Negative: no significant change was detected. Polygenic risk scores report percentile of risk. A negative or low risk finding may reduce your likelihood of having the condition tested, but does not guarantee zero risk.
Genetic results can have meaning for your relatives, too. If a change is found, your family members may also want to talk with their doctor about whether testing is right for them.
You may pay through insurance or by direct payment without insurance. If insurance is billed, you authorize Arboretum to submit claims and appeal denials on your behalf. You are responsible for any balance not covered by your plan.
Results go to your ordering provider and delivered to you via your portal account. Federal law (GINA) protects against discrimination by health insurers and employers based on genetic information.
Testing is always voluntary. You can choose not to test. You have the right to speak with your provider or a genetic counselor before and after your test. Your sample is kept securely per lab policy.
